The ANZAC STORY School Excursion and School-based Incursion Show - What does it mean? It is a live interactive incursion and school performance designed specifically to offer students the opportunity to learn through an interactive experience of THE ANZACs. Based on the HSIE Unit "Gallipoli and the ANZAC Tradition" it is an educational resource that no school should go without.

Students hear the anecdotes of the soldiers at war in the trenches at Gallipoli and learn through a heart-warming performance about why Australia as a new nation participated in this overseas conflict.

While the school incursion performance is based on the the HSIE Stage 3 (year 5-6) unit of "Australia's Experience at war", "Change and Continuity", the Year 7-10 Board of Studies History Syllabus Unit "Gallipoli and the ANZAC Tradition", and the National Curriculum of Australia History, it is suitable for Primary School Students as well who can experience the same interactive show and the importance of commemorating ANZAC DAY.

Can you hear Australia's heroes marching? is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice. The song has been used for commemorative purposes across Australia by schools, churches, choirs, bands, councils, retirement homes, military services, radio stations, RSL branches and ANZAC tributes at NRL & AFL matches. For a copy of the words (lyrics) to be used for school commemorative ceremonies and/or performances ... click here...© Peter Barnes 2001 Concept, title and lyrics: Peter Barnes .

Every school across Australia's commerates Anzac Day somehow and offers the community and their students the opportunity to remember those who lost their lives for those who are still living now. The ANZAC Story is a wonderful addition to your school's commeration ceremony as it depicts the courage and mate ship that gave birth to the ANZAC spirit. It tells the story of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps under orders from London landing at the wrong spot at Gallipoli Beach on the Turkish coast. Our brave soliders faced sheers cliffs and a barrage of defence fire from the Turkish Forces which became a military disaster.

Australia as a country was fourteen years old and was made up of colonies. This was the first time we had been to war as a nation and as part of the British Commonwealth they acquitted themselves as a nation under extreme circumstances and the ANZAC Story school incursion allows this to be shown in a highly acclaimed and remarkable experience for all students.

The show is set in the trenches at Gallipoli four months after the landing following the Battle of Lone Pine. The audience are taken into the action as it is seen through the eyes of the soldier, the Company Sergeant Major - a Boer War Veteran, a young recruit and a nurse. The performance leads the students into the heart of a young recruit who is proud to have enlisted and to do his part not fully understanding the horror of war and treating it like an adventure. Arriving at the beach he meets the Company Sergeant Major, a battle hardened soldier who began his service in the Boer War and who is in command along a veteran of this campaign. Then there is the Army Medical Corps situated on the Island of Lemnos where Sister Peterson, the sister of the young recruit, is on duty.

As the show in highly interactive and engaging, immersing the children in the history of Australia's past it involves students as Stretcher Bearers following in the footsteps of Jack Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey Duffy. It deals with the question of conscription and the war effort being made by Australia and whether we have the population to replace the losses. It shows the loneliness of the men and their links with home such as receiving the gum leaves and wattle received in their mail from home and the letters they write back to their loved ones.

The performance uses state of the art lights and audio to stimulate the senses of the students to involve them and give them an insight into Australia's role and all it asks, is that we remember the service men and women past and present and keep their memory alive. It is hoped that this production will go a long way in helping the younger generation to understand a little more about why we celebrate ANZAC Day.

It is performed with the greatest respect to the memory of the soldiers and is a moving presentation that treats the subject of the ANZAC and war with honour.

There is no better way to remember the fallen and commerate what they have done, then by experiencing this live, interactive and beautiful event that is makes you feel like you are in the War Zone.

There is only one way to find out ... Book your ticket to the most exciting Australian Historical Renactment ever seen.

The Anzac Story school incursion is a 90 minute show right in the safety of your school grounds.
It is a perfect event to have at your school to encourage, stimulate or enhance what the students are learning and is one of the best educational resources in Australia.

The performance was so very realistic that you couldn't say that it was enjoyable or entertaining. It was informative, sensitive and had the perfect mix of drama and historically accurate information to keep the students fully engaged from beginning to end.

    The Audience

"I loved the realistic gun shots and machine gun fire." Coby, aged 11 "Crawling through the trench was awesome! But I wouldn't like to do it again." Jaiden, aged 8 "The nurse made me cry." Chloe, aged 12 "I was scared at first but then I was happy to be a soldier on stage with my friends. I didn't want the Sergeant Major to yell at me but I knew he had to, it was part of the show." Zac, aged 8 "It was a great show and now I know a lot more about what the war was really like. I hope there are no more wars." Jozzlen, aged 111

I was unaware that this show involved student 'actors', and therefore had preparation to be completed before the event, until 5 weeks before the show. In the last 3 weeks of those 5 weeks we had school holidays for 2 weeks and then 1 week of school camp. This meant we had 2 weeks to prepare our students. As you may or may not be aware, it is ridiculously difficult to get students to participate in performance activities when they do not know exactly what they need to do. I understand the desire to keep everything a suprise, so they could fully experience the event, which was amazing in the end, but it made it very difficult in the time frame given to find willing participants and then to have them practice lines. The show was fantastic and the students loved it, but there was too much stress in the weeks leading up to it.

    The Show and Event

The student participation was the best part. It was engaging for both the stidents on stage and in the audience, and it allowed for more serious moments (to get the message across) as the audience was already engaged.

I just needed more information at the time of booking about what was expected of us in preparation for this show (all up we needed to find 69 students to be willing to get up on stage and speak without knowing what they would actually be required to do, and we only had 2 weeks to get them on board). As this was commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, the school felt it possible to pay $12.75 per student for this event. We had to fundraise, a lot, for this event to happen. This was the best show we have had tour for the wntire school.

    The Show and Event

The concept of involving some of the students as nurses, soldiers and stretcher bearers was great. The actors made the students' roles very easy with their "pre-show" rehearsal. The multi media presentation entertained all students and kept them engaged throughout the performance.

    The Audience

The entry through the trench was really effective for most students and the "safe door" was a great alternative for those not comfortable with the dark. The amount of "smoke" generated in the hall did impact on some children as they were distracted by trying to clear their vision. While the sound level was very loud (and probably more so due to the inside environs), it certainly gave a realistic portrayal of the times. Students had much to offer in the follow-up class discussions and had a better understanding of what it must have been like at Gallipoli.

Surely extended hours would suffice rather than 24 hours! (I did call on a Sunday to ask a question which I was workign at school so perhaps it wasn't such a bad thing after all!

My students all thought it was wonderful. They thoroughly enjoyed meeting the actors after the event and thought they were amazing. I don't know if I will get another chance to make a comment so I will make it now. I felt the show was suited much better to the older students. The Tresswell students have a deep understanding of ANZAC and our heritage, but I think, in a lot of schools the prior knowledge would not have been there for the younger students to benefit in the same manner.
