THE COLONIAL SHOW is a complete interactive event that allows children to experience what life was like back in the Colonial Times, during the Colonisation of Australia. With authentic equipment, real-life anecdotes, songs and events from the past, the Colonial Show is not only a must for all students learning about Australia History. It is a must - see show based on the audience interactive entertainment component that just completes the learning outcomes of this unit for teachers.
The whole day event is an educational resource which gave students an opportunity to interact with characters and experience life in Sydney Town in the early Colony of New South Wales 1788 - 1809 whichi is no longer accessible.
Schools, children, students and teacher will have exclusive, almost never before seen access to the nation‘s fledgling beginnings as a penal colony. The show is based on the Learning Outcomes of the Unit – “British Colonisation in Australia”, Stage 2 in the Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) Syllabus. This performance can ALSO be incorporated in the (COGS.) Connected Outcomes Group Support Curriculum. While the show is aimed at Years 3 and 4 it is suitable for the entire primary school. The show allows students to participate as the colonial time span comes alive with authentic props and professional actors. The Colonial Show brings to life with utter realism the story of Australia's colonisation.
The Colonial Show begins with the students being introduced to the larrikin Irish convict James Murphy and female convict Ann Fowles and experienced the hardships of the day and the oppression and tyranny they faced at the hands of the soldiers (Redcoats), and Sergeant Kennedy engages the students in the story of the Military.
The students relive the Voyage of the First Fleet, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, raising of the King’s Colours and participate in a recruitment of soldiers into the New South Wales Corp nicknamed the Rum Corps.
This is where the fun begins as your students and school experience the repercussions of the theft of damper and the arrest of the convict right in front of their eyes. The question is...
Can your students accurately become the magistrate for the trial of James Murphy and sentence him to a flogging?
Can they hold their wits and tell the story of the Black Velvet Band and how the British Government introduced the practise of Cribbing which framed tradesmen for the crime of theft.
Can they bear to hear the serious, yet funny stories of the characters and the reason they were sent to the Colony of NSW?
There is only one way to find out ... Book your ticket to the most exciting Australian Historical Renactment ever seen.
The Colonial Show is a whole day experience right in the safety of your school grounds.
It is a perfect event to have at your school to encourage, stimulate or enhance what the students are learning.
The Colonial Show was born out of the closure of Old Sydney Town, situated on the Central Coast, 2003.

As a teacher seeing the children so engaged with the characters and learning in a fun and exciting environment is just great.

The actors worked so hard to ensure as many members of the audience were able to be involved.

The actors wit, knowledge of their character and interaction with each other and the rapport established with the students makes this show stand out. It is definitely a great resource to encourage learning.

The educational content was beneficial to the learning outcomes and supported the curriculum well. I would recommend Iconic Performances and the Colonial Show

The actors used humour so beautifully to maintain the engagement of the students, which I think actually helped them re-focus on the educational message of that particular scene. They loved the soldier, and were probably, no certainly awed - by him. The gruff, serious persona was very effective in creating an authentic character. Some children asked if we would have the Colonial Show next year.
Others said it was the best day ever. They enjoyed James Murphy's whacky humour.
This is one of the best educational shows I have organised and seen. I loved the way the company and the actors conveyed so much information while remaining very involved and entertaining.
I would recommend this to every school. The price is well worth the outcomes the students get.

The show was so authentic, we really felt like it was the Colonial Times. The costumes, characters and equipment were real. The morning session was great with lots of interaction and movement. More movement of the children in the other parts would be great to.

Children have raved about the show non stop! Would have been nice to have children move around a lot more. Especially at the end of the day. Overall though, Liked the reinforcement of content. Kids thoroughly enjoyed it

I liked that the whole school was involved and it was great how students became actors as well.

As a Parent said "that was absolutely fabulous - I learnt so much myself - I wish we had things like this when we went to school".

Stage 2 had been completing activities in class on British Colonisation. The show portrayal of a soldier was excellent and reinforced the work. The actors were able to explain to the children the events and things that happened in such a way that the children could understand. The use of children in the day also reinforced their understanding. I thought it was very well planned and the use of the audience participation is a great reinforcement of children's learning.
